Just read the followings as to how TATA management did it when terrorism crippled the Hotel Taj Bombay in 2008.
How TATA did and how BSNL didn't: -
TATA treated all category of employees as beneficiary on duty including those who had completed even 1 day as casuals. BSNL denied 30% fitment to new direct recruits (DR-JTO 2007 and onwards recruits).
The relief and assistance was extended even to those, who had nothing to do with TATA like pedestrians, Pav-Bhaji wala, Pan wala, Policeman, railway employees and onlookers, who died or injured; and were provided with subsistence allowance of Rs. 10000 per month for for 6 months. BSNLians' parents are denied medical benefits if they have monthly meager earning of Rs. 1500.
During the time the hotel was closed, the salaries were sent by money order. BSNL has denied E2 /E3 scale purposefully just because it is beneficial to Dr-Executives.
A psychiatric cell was established in collaboration with Tata Institute of Social Sciences to counsel and track the thoughts and anxieties going on in people’s mind. One of the BSNLian recently attempted to commit suicide out of frustration.
Every employee was assigned to one mentor and it was that person’s responsibility to act as a “single window” clearance for any help that the person required. BSNLians run pillar to post for their dues and rights, more specifically by approaching courts and CATs.
Ratan Tata personally visited the families of all the 80 employees who either were injured or killed. In BSNL only Welfare Inspector visits.
The dependents of the employees were flown to out of Mumbai & back, and were taken care of in terms of ensuring mental assurance and peace. They were all accommodated in Hotel President (5 Stars) for three weeks. BSNL IQs are booked only for the kiths and kins of ITSs and also their VIP friends.
Mr. Ratan Tata himself asked the families and dependents “Please tell as to what they wanted him to do”. Our Hon'ble CMD appeals “DO IT YOURSELF”.
In a record time of 20 days, a new trust was created by the Tatas for the welfare of employees. BSNL could not do the same (EPF Trust) even in 10 years (really a shame), and the full debit of which goes to BSNL honchos.
A four year old girl, who got 4 bullets in her, was taken to Bombay Hospital and several lacs were spent on her full recovery by the TATA. The medical facility for all family dependents for rest of their life. BSNLians are denied genuine medical reimbursements even at CGHS rates.
Tata took responsibility of life education of 46 children of the victims of the terror, and complete responsibility of education for children of deceased employees that too anywhere in the world. BSNLians are paid Rs. 40 as Children Education Allowance.
The most sadden time for Mr. Ratan Tata was to visit the funerals for over the 3 days. The settlement for every deceased person ranged from Rs. 36 to 85 lacs. BSNL denies 30% superannuation benefits to DR's & asks DPE clarification despite GoM recommendations.
Had BSNL taken care of its employees, the GM Sahib would have quoted “ We already Doing It” instead of “We Can Do It”. Every employee would have taken his “Work as Worship”, and there would not have any place for appeal such as “We Can Do It”.
